Event Overview

Transform your favorite mug into an adorable soy candle in an interactive candle-making class, which teaches you everything you need to know to make soy candles. The session is led by experienced candle-maker Jess Snively, creator of Milton and Margie’s Soy Wax Candles. She started her business in 2008 selling candles at local craft fairs. Today, you can find her candles at major retailers such as Target and in boutiques throughout the nation.

Throughout the process, you’ll learn the nuances of scent theory (complete with a take-home guide) and you will create your own signature fragrance from a blend of scented soy-based oils. Jess supplies eclectic oils with options ranging from floral (e.g., Lavender and Juniper) to natural (e.g., Cedar and Eucalyptus) and sweet (e.g., Buttercream and Fudge Brownie) to rugged (e.g., Leather).

All the supplies are provided, including wax and fragrance oils. You can bring your own container or purchase one on-site. You’ll get 1 lb. of wax, and depending on the size of your container(s), you’ll leave with 1–2 completed candles. (For reference, 16 oz. will perfectly fill a container the size of a standard can of veggies.)

Jess has poured candles in nearly everything that can be described as a “container”—quirkier finds have included a glass cowboy boot, vintage egg cup, honey bear jar, and mug that says “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”—so feel free to go on a thrift-shopping spree before class.

To help fuel your creative process, the cocktails will be flowing freely!

I'll provide all the materials for making the candles and have a small selection of containers that you can purchase for $2 each. And, of course, I'll bring the cocktails!

Great class! It was a perfect middle of the afternoon treat to hang out and make candles. Jess is super friendly and willing to answer any questions. I learned a lot about scent theory, and I was delighted by my end product! The margaritas Jess made rounded out the whole experience!

My friend/coworker suggested we take this class as something unique for us to do on a Saturday afternoon. It was a great way to spend the day! We brought our own canister for the completed candles but otherwise everything was provided to us. I was a little uncertain going into the class if it would be messy, overwhelming, and how I would come up with my own signature scent but we received exactly the right amount of instruction and guidance for what we needed. The margaritas provided were also delicious.

I really enjoyed this class with Jess! She's a great teacher! I received a basic understanding of how to make a soy candle, and then created a custom scent for a candle from a ridiculous amount of fragrance choices...... Amazing!! This is a great class; I walked away feeling like I learned a lot; but also with a new appreciation for soy candles/local creations.

This was our second time taking the candle class and it was still just as much fun! My friend and I wanted to review the process to create candles on our own at home and went back to Jess's class because it was so helpful the first time. I walked out of there with two nice smelling candles and the feeling that I could branch out on my own. Great class.

I highly recommend taking this candle-making course with Jessica! The class was fun and relaxing. You also learn how easy it is to make a candle. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this class since I'm not very good at crafty things, but I ended up having a lot of fun. The candles were very easy to make with step by step instructions given. There's a big variety of scents to choose from so your candle can smell however you want. Mine turned out looking beautiful and the hot toddies were a nice complement to the class. Highly recommend.

Paperish Mess was an awesome location for the class - we all left with little trinkets from the store (10% off for class attendees!). The class itself was fun. This is the second time I've taken this class because I love it so much! Wonderful teacher, really informative, and I appreciated learning the science behind pairing scents to put in candles.
