Event Overview

Comic Books 101 will introduce you to the wonderful world of comics. If you have ever wanted to read comic books but were not sure where to start, then this is the class for you.

The first half of class will include a short introduction, history of comics and intro to the different sub-genres. In the second portion of class we will read a comic together to understand how the graphics and the written word tell the story. You will walk away with a greater understanding of comic books, resources on where to find comic books and a list of books for you to explore.

Dave Bell is our guest teacher and is a curator of pop culture. He can pinpoint the instant when he fell in love with each medium (music, film, television, literature and comics). For Dave art transcends time and space and encapsulates a moment. His knowledge of pop culture is epic.

Dave Bell has been reading comics since he first learned how to read. Comic books are another form of literature that he believes everyone can read. Since he is such an avid comic book reader he is very good at matching up peoples reading or pop culture interests to a favored comic book. Every Saturday morning you can find him reading comics.

Please note the cost of the class includes a copy of The Unwritten. At Meandering Design we believe in supporting local businesses and the books are purchased from Third Coast Comics here in Chicago.

Meandering Design is located in Lincoln Square on the 5300 block of Damen Avenue.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Kandy Christensen

Top rated icon TOP RATED

Kandy is constantly reading and if there is nothing but the cereal box in front of her, well then, she'll read that. She was always intrigued by comics and would read over the boys' shoulders in school. As a shy quiet introvert, though, comic book stores were intimidating. It took 20 years for her to rediscover comics, and once she did, a whole new world opened up.

Kandy received her Master's in English with a concentration in teaching from DePaul University. That basically means that she reads a lot!
