Event Overview

Join Dan Metzger of Willow Garlic Growers for a demonstration on braiding garlic into a variety of shapes. We’ll discuss ways to keep your garlic harvest fresh for months to come, as well as the merits of growing and eating several different heirloom varieties, including those from the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

Participants are welcome to bring their own homegrown garlic for a braid-along. Dan’s garlic and braids will also be available for purchase.

This demo will be located at Global Garden, one of Peterson Garden Project's community gardens.

What to Bring

Students may bring their own homegrown garlic to braid, if desired.

Minimum age

All ages welcome

What's Provided

We will provide string for the braid-along.

Meet Dan Metzger, an organic (non-certified) garlic grower in NW Illinois, where he grows 20 varieties of garlic, including softneck and hardneck. Dan was a Slow Food Terra Madre Delegate in 2014, and currently grows several heirloom varieties, which he sells at the Logan Square Farmers' Market at a shared booth with Pear Tree Preserves.
