Embroidery: Japanese Temari with a C8 Division
This class is for the absolute beginner who would like to walk away with a beautiful handcraft that is suitable for gifting when completed. Hundreds of years ago, Temari (embroidered thread balls) evolved as a craft of recycling as Japanese mothers used kimono scraps to make toys for their children. Today Temari enthusiasts are attracted to this unique craft for the colors, designs, symmetry, and the allure of an ancient craft. This class will introduce you to creating the canvas on which the stitching takes place and to divide the Temari sphere into 8 divisions. Using various color embroidery threads you can create your first wrapped (or maybe even stitched) Temari. It takes many tries to perfect the geometry and stitches of this craft - but the results are beautiful! As a spectacular gift or decorating focal point, the puzzle of the design is mesmerizing.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

We are a Not For Profit organization whose mission is "Textile Art for All". If it is textile based and you can make it by hand, we want to teach it in our studios at the beautiful Bridgeport Art Center! Our philosophy is to run contemporary, hands-on, project-based workshops, so that you can come along, learn something new and go home with a finished product or a new skill. Why? Because there is tremendous power in making something yourself. You will learn new skills or revisit old ones; you will discover the joy of working with your hands and you will find an outlet for your creativity. Along the way you will review your spirit and perhaps make a few new friends. All of our classes are taught by visiting artists and/or experts in the field. We offer adult workshops in beginning sewing, intermediate sewing, couture sewing and 45 different surface design techniques. For kids we offer Saturday programs and summer camps. We also offer textile art events for birthdays, bridal showers, girls night out etc. so ask Dabble about group pricing.

All of our classes are offered at a nominal fee and all proceeds are used to bring textile arts to urban youth in Chicago in form of after school programs, summer programs, apprenticeships and internships.

We look forward to welcoming you in our studios.
Your Urban Threads Studio Team

This class was excellent. The instructor friendly and helped me, step-by-step, with the instruction to learn such a beautiful art-form (despite me being terribly late). The space was clean and the environment was lighthearted and friendly. I would definitely recommend others to take this class.

The Japanese Temari class was really great, although there was a lot more mindless labor than one would have thought. I appreciated that it was a fun group that had some good conversation while we were wrapping, because although it seems like you'd be speedy at it, you're not! :) I'd definitely take another class at the Urban Threads space. (Apparently they also have multi-day classes, but can only offer 1-day classes thru Dabble, so inquire with UT if you're interested!)

Fun class! The instruction was easy to follow and the teacher was very positive and helpful. I also liked that it was smaller class so the instructor could give more attention to each student.

I'm very excited to make more temari balls in the future!
