Event Overview

Nordic Walking is a fun whole-body aerobic activity. The simple addition of walking poles will turn your walk into a total body workout, engaging up to 90% of your body’s muscles while increasing your heart rate & calories burned.

Nordic Walking for Fitness - Four Class Series
Nordic Walking is the perfect fitness activity. It is fun, easy, and a great activity to share with friends. Walking with poles can also increase upper body strength and mobility as well as improve core stability and posture. Sessions will start with the basic walking techniques and progress to include fitness and trail walking techniques suitable for any walking pace, duration or distance. Sessions will be taught by a certified Nordic Walking instructor.

This class is designed as a series of 4 one-hour sessions and is geared to those that can walk 45-60 minutes or 1-3 miles at an average pace.

Sessions will cover:
May 3: Session 1 – Health benefits of Nordic Walking, basic walking and pole techniques.
May 10: Session 2 – Arm swing and gripping technique to engage the upper body muscles and core.
May 17: Session 3 – Stride length and walking techniques for fitness walking.
May 24: Session 4 – Adaptable pole use for various terrain, Nordic trail walking and/or interval training.

What to Bring

Wear walking shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor walking. Weather cancellations will be issued at least 2 hours before class time, session will be rescheduled.

Walking Poles will be available for participants to use for class.

Why do Nordic Walking?
Years ago when she lived in Minnesota, Wendy worked with a skilled personal trainer who believed that physical activity should be Safe, Effective and Efficient. She has always loved walking outdoors, and Nordic Walking allows her to walk safely in any weather and on any terrain, provides an effective cardio workout (allowing her to increase her heart rate 10-15% above regular walking) and provides a more efficient workout in the time she has to walk. Nordic Walking has also been a great activity to do with family and friends.

Why teach Nordic Walking classes?
When she moved to the Chicago area from Minnesota, Wendy wasn't finding any nordic walking groups, so she decided to start her own. Her first step included becoming a certified instructor in 2014 and starting teaching classes and leading group walks that summer. To expand on her Nordic Walking and Fitness coaching in 2015 she became a personal trainer. Now Wendy spends her time teaching Nordic Walking and Fitness Walking, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to use walking to increase their activity level.
