Event Overview

In this hands-on workshop you will create your own hand marbled paper. There are lots of techniques for marbling that people use such as shaving cream, nail polish, and spray paint.  This class will teach you how to marble the traditional way, with carrageenan sizing and marble paints. We will use the carrageenan to thicken water in a tray and float paints on top.  The floating parts are swirled and manipulated to make beautiful, one-of-a-kind patterns.  You then lay the paper on top of the pattern to create your print.

You can do lots of things with marbled paper-like make stationery, line drawers, make lampshades, etc.

We will learn about how to set up the "size" (thickened water tray), mix some colors, then just spend an hour or so experimenting.

You will get your own mini marbling starter kit (shown in the photos) and will use colors from your kit in the workshop.  Your kit also includes alum to treat paper, the carrageenan to add to the water and 6 colors so you can go home and do it again!

If you are interested in turning your marbled paper into stationery I can show you how to do this and send you home with some supplies for that. Because our paper is very thin I like to use plain stationery as a base and glue the marbled paper on top of the cards and insert some into the envelope flap.

The class will take place on the third floor of my building so please bear in mind that there will be stair climbing involved.  After that, the class is not strenuous. You will be seated at a table working and can BYOB if you want.
