Event Overview

Soul Food today is a proud expression of African American history and culture. With roots in traditional Southern cooking and techniques, passed down through generations of slaves and their descendants, Soul Food often incorporates “offal” and other “discarded" ingredients into comfortable, honest, delicious recipes that speak of home, family and overcoming adversity. Come cook and savor with us our favorite soul food feast of ham hocks, greens and buttermilk corn bread from our grandmother’s kitchen, learn the differences between “Southern” and “Soul” food, and discover why this traditional American cuisine is gaining a new audience with some of today’s hottest chefs!

This hands-on class is BYOB. Come hungry!!

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Alwin “Ham” Livingston and Shawna Bohn, the creative team behind Ham and Bone Catering, have been cooking traditional soul food together for over 10 years. Ham brought his family’s treasured recipes and a lifetime of hospitality experience to the mix; Shawna earned her chops in the restaurant industry and later became a food writer and culinary guide. Now, they travel often, eat voraciously and love coming home to Chicago to cook and host epic Sunday suppers for friends, family and soul food fans!
