Event Overview

Bullying affects student attendance, work performance, grades and participation in activities whether they are bullied, the bully or bystanders. It happens in schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, in cyberspace and, ultimately, in their own heads. If you have children and/or work with young people in any capacity, this is a workshop for you.

Every workshop participant will receive a manual filled with creative activities, resources, inspiration and reflection questions. You will be guided through the manual and taught how to implement the activities with the young people in your life. Furthermore, you will be provided with a language system that will be helpful in communicating about this difficult issue.

I have worked in many schools (urban, suburban, elementary, middle, high school, low-income, high-income...) over the last 15 years and found that all students are struggling with bullying in one way or another. Let's work together to help today's young people overcome such a wide-spread epidemic.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Hello! I am Karen Light, Artist, Illustrator, Teaching Artist and Founder of Creative Courage Art (www.creativecourageart.com).

As a Teaching Artist, I have worked in urban and suburban schools and organizations for 15 years. Currently, I teach art at the University of Chicago Charter School: Carter G. Woodson Campus and through the Oak Park Education Foundation, Changing Worlds and Urban Gateways Center for Arts Education. Every day, issues related directly and indirectly to bullying and violence continually surface in the classroom. These issues lead to anger and rage, stress and anxiety and apathy and depression which get in the way of students learning and becoming healthy human beings. Yet, there are few places created for young people to share their experiences, process their deep emotional responses and learn tools for handling these distressing situations.

I have found that teaching students about these issues happens naturally through art projects that allow them to express their emotions and share their experiences. Oftentimes, these projects also lead to community building and leadership development which empowers them to make changes and speak up. This is what inspired me to start Creative Courage Art.

I have been immersed in the magic of visual art-making since someone first put a crayon in my hand. This eventually led me to obtaining a BFA with a concentration in sculpture from Xavier University and at that time I also began to teach young people art through summer camps and volunteer opportunities. Inspired by how art allows me the space to dive into my inner world and find the healing needed along life’s Journey, I went to graduate school for Cultural Management at City University London in the hopes of finding a way to share the power of art with others. There I discovered organizations using arts for social change and my true calling showed itself.
