Join shibori artist Christian Ortiz as he teaches you - always in trend - Shibori Designs & Techniques. The Japanese term shibori, which means to wring, squeeze or press, now encompasses many different forms of resist-dyeing which all involve shaping and compressing fabric in some way before dyeing it.
In this class you will learn simple binding, two-stage binding, spiderweb binding, kanoko binding. Binding is one of the simplest and oldest methods of decorating cloth. You can fold fine fabrics in half or even into four and bind several layers together to save time. Binding creates rings or stripes of different sizes. The size of the object will determine the size of the centre of your ring and the more times you wind the binding round, the wider your ring or stripe will be. You will use strong thread, string, or raffia.
Workshop Duration: 3 Hours
Level: Beginner to Expert - No Prior Experience Necessary
Skills Learned: Binding techniques and kamosage knot
Materials Provided: White cotton yardage, dyes, rubber gloves, buckets, resists, and accessories
Student Can Bring: Garment, accessory, or fabric made of natural materials (Cotton, Rayon, Silk)

Instructor: Christian Ortiz
Christian has strong artistic skills and a professional background. He has
a
BFA in fiber arts from Northern Illinois University, 2010 as well as a BSED in art education from Northern Illinois University, 2010. He is
specifically skilled in: shaped-resist dyeing (shibori), chemical/natural dye
methods, papermaking, bookbinding, and other surface design processes.
Organization: Urban Threads Studio, NFP
The world around us is changing quickly but our need for communal gatherings in
a nurturing and creative setting is not. Urban Threads Studio is a D-I-Y (do it
yourself) collaborative studio that hopes to introduce you to the wonderful
ancient craft of sewing and textile art with a 21st century twist. You may just
want to rediscover a skill you learned as a child, experience the calm energy of
a day of crafting or pick up an altogether new or more advanced skill like
dyeing or felting. Our program hopes to accomplish all that and much more. All
of our classes are offered at a nominal fee and all proceeds are used to bring
textile arts to urban youth in Chicago in form of after school programs, summer
programs, and internships.

Great intro into the art of Shibori...Christian was very personable and knowledgeable. The class flew by and even though we ran over the allotted time frame! Christian was patient and encouraging to stay longer if we were able. Interesting and educational - thank you!

Great class, however the room where it's held within the Bridgeport Art Center is really difficult to find. The instructor was really knowledgable about technique and process and the flow of the class felt logical, well-guided with a lot of room left for creative experimentation. The class was relaxed, small and intimate and just what I was hoping to learn. Totally got me excited to keep working at mastering the art of Shibori! Recommended.

Very knowledgeable and experienced, friendly and responsive teacher. A lot to cover, but satisfying results. The instructor fully disclosed the course was to wet the students appetite for a longer workshop, as there is just too much to learn in two hours, and it did leave me wanting to learn more.
