Event Overview

We may be too old to play with Barbies and G.I. Joes ... but there are plenty of adult alternatives to keep us entertained and using our imaginations. Our favorite alternative is creating terrarium art ... it's like a grown up's version of a dollhouse!

In this class, Dabblers will learn the history of the terrarium and follow step-by-step instructions in this hands-on workshop. Learn tips for selecting potters, the types of plants that can be used in a terrarium, how to arrange for optimal aesthetic balance, quirky add-ins that can bring life (and humor) to your terrarium and how to care for the ecosystem inside once it's been properly set up.

Then we'll roll up our sleeves and put theory to practice, working with provided materials to plan, pot and plant our very own doses of 'spring in a bottle' to tide us over through the winter. Your imagination is the limit, folks, so don't forget yours at home!

Seth Harper received his horticulture education at West Virginia University. He spent five years tending the indoor tropical rainforest at the National Aquarium in Baltimore before coming to Chicago. He currently works at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, growing everything from garden vegetables to exotic greenhouse plants.

This was a wonderful terrarium class. In the beginning, we learn a little about the history if how terrariums came about. We them learned how to construct one. After, we were able to make our very own! Highly recommend this class!

This was an excellent class. It had just the right amount of history about terrariums, information about making your own terrarium, and time to make your own terrarium. All materials are provided but if you have something in mind you can bring your own container or figurines to add to your terrarium. This class the perfect length of time to keep you engaged and having fun! Seth was a good teacher and interesting to listen to. He also showed two example of terrariums he made in previous years that were still thriving from being set on a shelf and forgotten about. Finally a plant I can't kill :)

"1. Teacher was a pro in his field and was passionate about the subject. He had a nice power point presentation with lots of interesting historical facts and images.

2. What a venue! Super easy to get to class. Greeters at the door. Spacious room with seating for everyone.

3. Awesome takeaway - I built a BIG terrarium, with fun things like rocks and army men available, too. I also have the confidence and creative interest to build more on my own."

I thought the class description matched the real class very well. The instructor was engaging and knew the material. There were enough supplies for everyone and the space big enough that we could work comfortably when it was time to make our own terrariums.

The hands-on building of the terrarium, after learning about the history and various types, was really informative and fun. I love that I got to bring home my very own living, "breathing" creation!
