Event Overview

There are two types of people in this world: People who hear the word 'worms' and squeal at the thought of the creepy crawlies getting underfoot, and people who hear the word 'worms' and pine for the days when they were young enough to dig them up bare-handed after a summer rain and flaunt them at the former screaming types.

If you're the former, we're challenging you to re-think your fear of vermes in the spirit of living a waste-free urban life. If you're the latter ... welcome home.

This Dabble class is all about composting with worms! Explore your curiosity about vermi-composting, and walk through the steps of setting up a worm-bin: from selecting the location in your house, to picking out a bin, to building a worm bed, to what to feed your new friends (hint: your table scraps!) and ending with troubleshooting tips for beginners.

Prepare to leave class with a completed starter bin and then run, not walk, home so you can watch in amazement as your new slimy pets devour up to 1/2 pound of food scraps per day.

Fantastic! Laura is a great teacher and the class had a good flow between info, Q&A, & making our worm bins. You'll leave the class with your own worm compost starter kit...bin, worms, newspaper, & the knowledge to be successful. I will definitely be back for more classes at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum!

Great class! Exactly what I expected and now have worms under my sink that I know how to take care of. Definitely worth the fee!

Excellent class! Made a worm composting box and the little critters are hard at work under the kitchen sink. Very knowledgeable teacher, excellent location, materials. I highly recommend it. After having taken this class I could easily make another worm composting box on my own!

I gotta admit - I was really, really excited for this class, and it totally paid off. I was so excited, in fact, that my friends told me that I had surpassed hipster, and had arrived at full-on hippie.

The information was very clear, and I felt involved as a class. I loved hunting in the worm box at the end so I could find the new residents of my own box - and those new residents are doing great!

I'd totally take another class at the Nature Museum. :)

This was a great class. The teacher was very knowledgeable and interesting. It was fun to make our own compost bin and get to take it home, complete with a starter kit including worms! I've tried outdoor composting on numerous occasions and have given up for one reason or another. This is a new, easier way to compost on a smaller scale. If you are interested in composting---check it out! Great time and learned something new.

This was a great jumping off point for novice composters. It was truly a "101" class--we were given a good overview in the basics of worm composting and a small worm bin to take home with us. The instructor was knowledgeable about the topic. I'd be interested in going to a more in-depth "part 2" to this course, with a bit more guided q&a about urban composting. Overall good experience.

This is a good class if you're looking to start small and learn a few things about worm composting. The bin you leave with is quite small, so if you're serious about wanting to compost a higher volume of your vegetable matter than a few banana peels a week, you might want to look for a different class or do more research online instead.
