Dyes from the Garden

Natural dyes are a beautiful and sustainable way to bring color to textiles. In this workshop, Perennial Programs Director + Missouri Master Naturalist Tara Morton will show you how to create dye baths from plants grown in Perennial’s educational dye garden. Participants will learn how to process a few in-season plants, like marigolds and yarrow (subject to change based on what is in-season), to create hand-dyed fabrics in colors such as yellow, olive green, orange and gray. Participants will be able to create test strips from each dye bath to keep for future reference. We will also provide a few larger pieces of fabric made of 100% natural fibers (white cotton, silk, or wool) that have been prepared in a mordant, and participants will learn some dye resist techniques as well as the use of an iron modifier to change the dye color results.
Important: This is an in-person class that will take place outside in Perennial’s education garden. You will be assigned your own socially distanced work station, and will be required to wear a mask while you are here. Our full policies can be found here.
