Event Overview

Join Derrick Langeneckert of Alpha Brewing Company for a special sour beer tour/tasting at the brewery. Excited to add this new line of sour beers to an already impressive roster of local craft beers, Alpha Brewing Company is tucked away in the heart of downtown on Washington Avenue.

Exploring the ins and outs of sour beer, students will get an intimate and first hand look into the makings and history of this unique beverage.

This class will start out with a tour of the brewery led by Derrick himself. After a tour of the brewery students will be able to get into the nitty gritty - the tasting. At least five sour beers, brewed in house will be available for taste tasting. Derrick will be there to answer any and all questions as well as instruct students on the various complexities of sour beer.

ALL students will walk away with a free Alpha Brewing Tulip glass in addition to a new found appreciation for sour beer.

*Sour AND draft beers will be available for purchase after the class.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Derrick Langeneckert is the brains behind Alpha Brewing Company which opened it's doors in 2013 on Washington Ave. in the downtown district. Derrick has a masters of biology from The University of Missouri St. Louis. He has worked in breweries for four years including the cellar program at Alpha Brewing Company for the past two years.

After returning to the US after a year long stint living abroad Derrick decided to start his own journey into brewing beer in 2010. After countless batches later construction for the brewery was under way. In 2013 when Alpha Brewing opened its doors the brewery boasted a selection of 14 beers on draft.

Alpha Brewing offers a wide variety of beers from hoppy to everyday beers in addition to their sour beers collection.

Was very interesting to hear about the process of making sour beers and the differences in all the barrels and microbes, etc. Equally as wonderful to taste from the barrel as well as a full flights. Love that they have such a variety of sours, something I don't feel I see very often.

Great class. Derrick was very knowledgable not just about Sour Beers, but many others as well. All the students were really engaged and asked a lot of questions, which was helpful for everyone involved.

Sour Beers 101 with Derrick was a joy and I would recommend the class to anyone with even a passing interest in sour beers. Derrick provided a brief and general overview of the brewing process, followed by elaborating on details about the souring process and the variations in souring yeasts and bacteria. Derrick also reviewed the different barrel types used in barrel aging. The class ended with a tasting that was delicious and covered by the class cost. The tequila gose was my personal favorite.
