Event Overview

Mala necklaces are strands of 108 beads + 1 guru bead—typically stones, crystals, sandalwood, or rudraksha beads that carry certain energy—traditionally used during japa meditation, where a mantra is quietly repeated 108 times.

Wearing the mala as a necklace or as a bracelet throughout the day helps you manifest the power of the stone or crystal. And much like a rosary, the beads help the practitioner keep track of their place as they move through a meditation practice with the beads in between their thumb and forefinger (never letting the beads touch the middle finger, a sign of disrespect). At the 109th bead, it is customary to give gratitude to teachers and the most important people in your life.

Why 108? It is said there are 108 reasons why this number is considered sacred in the yoga practice. Some examples include the 108 energy lines that converge to form the heart chakra, 108 goddess names, and the diameter of the sun, which is 108 times the diameter of the earth. Another theory says the number 1 stands for God, the universe or your own highest truth; 0 stands for emptiness and humility in spiritual practice; and 8 stands for infinity and timelessness.

Although mala beads are traditionally used during seated meditation, they can also enhance an asana practice. Place the mala at the top of your yoga mat, as a reminder of the intention you are trying to manifest, as you move through your vinyasa.

In this ~2 hour Dabble experience you will:

  • be provided all of the materials needed to create a mala bead necklace

  • be given instruction for how to make your mala bead necklace

  • be encouraged to get creative with your design; you'll be able to choose stone type, guru bead, tassle, charm, + silk thread color

  • be offered a beverage (red/white wine)

  • be in the company of good people!

  • bonus! you'll learn about the properties + healing powers of the stones you select for your necklace AND where to purchase the goods for future mala making endeavors :)

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

In 2018, I set an intention to do more with my hands and heart, and less with technology.

As a dedicated and passionate yogi, one of the many crafts I honed was making mala necklaces. Beading projects have brought me significant joy and creativity, as well as peace and contentment when I use or wear my mala beads.

I am excited to share this new skill on the Dabble platform. And look forward to meeting you!

Great class. Instructor was thorough in teaching her method. I had a ton of fun! Only suggestion I have is make the class longer so students can get further in their Mala piece!
