MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST
Amy loves teaching African dance to anybody interested in learning, from youth to seniors. Amy’s first African dance class was in 1999 in Albuquerque, NM. There she studied with her beloved teacher, Master Artist Rujeko Dumbutshena of Zimbabwe. The call of the drums and the welcoming of the community grounded her deeply in the art form. Amy was taken under Rujeko’s wing as an understudy in her dance company, Blue Tribe, in which she worked her way up to be a principal dancer. Over the years Amy traveled to Guinea, West Africa, and studied with popular dance company artists of National Ballet Djoliba, Matam Ballet, and Ballets Africains. She and her husband Master Artist, Abdoulaye Camara of Guinea West Africa, tour nationally and internationally, teaching and performing with delight this invigorating and enlivening dance form. Amy’s teachers encouraged her to pass on her knowledge of this niche form to the broader community. Amy and Abdoulaye tag team teach, where Amy steps in when he is traveling, to refine and focus on technique of the traditional dances he has shared.
