Open to participants of ALL yoga level & practice
Masuma Rasheed, Ph.D. is an experienced psychotherapist in addition to a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and LifeForce Yoga® Practitioner (LFYP).
Have you ever left a yoga class feeling a heightened sense of relief & clarity while at the same time feeling less anxious, worried, and heavy? We know that yoga has been prescribed by physicians for years as a way to lower blood pressure and minimize health risks; however, have you ever wondered how yoga helps with these issues? Dr. Rasheed has extensive training in understanding the psychology behind yoga and actively utilizes this knowledge and skill in clinical counseling settings, yoga classes, lectures, and workshops. Dr. Rasheed believes that when we experience any type of hardship in life, our physical bodies store those emotional wounds. Therefore, we cannot truly address these issues by verbal dialogue alone, and the use of the body is also required through postures, movement, and breathing practice to allow for effective emotional release and mood elevation--all of which are supported by evidence-based research in psycho-neurobiology.
In these classes, you will learn the following through lecture and yoga movement:
- The psychological benefits for specific breath work, body postures, and meditation techniques.
- Methods to feel grounded & balanced during times of stress through body movement.
- How to be aware of when you are out of balance in your life; then, learn specific yoga tools to self-regulate the nervous system to regain that balance.
- Understand how emotional traumas have impacted specific parts of the body; then learn tools on how to release that energy.
These classes will provide a fun experience where you will learn more about yourself, experience cohesion with others in the community, and learn the psychological benefits behind yoga to enhance your practice.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST
For the past ten years, Dr. Rasheed has worked as a psychotherapist and has extensive counseling training in a variety of areas. Dr. Rasheed sees individual adult clients and groups at Studio for Change, while also educating the public on emotional health throughout the Chicago area.
As a LifeForce Yoga Practitioner (LFYP), Dr. Rasheed employs yoga for treating depression and anxiety and is certified in Yoga for 12-Step Recovery and Psychology of the Body System. She uses the connection between mind, body, and breath in counseling sessions and workshops to access the body’s healing power, and harnesses the power of mindfulness to elevate mood.
When we experience any type of stress, our physical bodies store those emotional wounds. Therefore, we often cannot address these issues by verbal dialogue alone, and the use of the body is required through movement and breathing practice to allow for effective emotional release. Performing certain types of body movement can help to release obstructions and lead to relief and mood elevation.
Dr. Rasheed provides an informative discussion on emotional health as well as implements practical body psychotherapy elements related to caring for yourself. These elements will include minor movements, stretching, and breath work—all of which are supported by evidence-based research in psycho-neurobiology to assist in clearing away stress and tension.
Dr. Rasheed is available for individual and group talk therapy and/or talk + body psychotherapy and classes.
Outside the studio, Dr. Rasheed loves to practice yoga and tai chi; in addition to playing with her dog, Winnie.
