Real Framed Butterfly & Moth Pinning
12 Have Dabbled
Arts & DIY
We will be working with a real (dried) sunset moth, which comes from Madagascar off the coast of Africa. This is one of the most beautiful bugs in the world! With an incredible neon "sunset" like color display on it's wings.
The class will begin with a brief introduction to the butterfly & insect world, where our insects come from (the importance of ethically & legally obtained material which died of natural causes), and an overview of the history of working with dried butterflies from Victorian times to modern day. Then we will move to working with dried moths & butterflies. We will have your moth ready to go, and lead the class through an introduction to the pinning method which is used in butterfly preservation. Whether you are interested in building a world-class bug or butterfly collection or just looking for one stunning piece of natural art for your home; this class is a great way to learn about the butterfly world.
The class will be held at our beautiful office in The Bridgeport Art Center, where you'll be surrounded by hundreds of the most incredible butterflies and insects from all over the world. You will leave with your moth preserved in a beautiful museum-grade frame
*There is free parking available in the parking lot on the north side of the Bridgeport Art Center, once you arrive come to the single BLUE door on the north side of a building, and take the elevator to fourth floor!
All ages welcome
A museum-style black frame with glass from, and all supplies necessary to preserve a Sunset Moth from Madagascar

Hello and welcome to The Butterfly Company! I have been a life-long lover of butterflies, insects, and the natural world and have many years of experience working directly with butterflies and insects. As a company, we have over 40 years of history and a diverse and extensive family of customers and suppliers around the globe.
Let me start by saying that Joe, the instructor, was amazing. He was very informative, patient and answered everyones questions. The facility was gorgeous even though they had just moved into their new space. The value of the cost of this class is on point. You not only go home with a beautiful piece, you get to take home the knowledge on how to pin butterflies, moths and other insects by yourself! This was a great experience that all insect butterfly and moth lovers should take. By far the best dabble class I have taken to date!

It was a cold and rainy day and I almost cancelled but am so glad I went. I ended up being the only student but had a great time. First off, the venue is at the Bridgeport Art Center (which if you haven’t been, go! Apparently every third Friday night they have a public open house. In between work on the butterfly, I got a tour of the place and I definitely want to go back).
Second, the instructor is the nicest guy. I was ready for it to be a bit awkward bc it was 1:1 but not at all. I now know all I could ever want to know about butterflies.
If you have the slightest interest in learning about this type of art work, go. I’m a hobby crafter and now have tons of unique ideas of how to incorporate butterflies into my hobbies. I’m just kicking myself now for not bringing more butterflies home to work with!
