Event Overview
With the 1848 arrival of the railroad and the Illinois and Michigan Canal to Chicago, the city began its unprecedented boom. Alongside the growth of business came the explosion of the city’s infamous underworld.
Join us for a unique take on Nelson Algren’s “Hustlertown, USA.” Kayak the Chicago River as the sun sets into twinkling darkness and experience the legacy of our nefarious gangsters. You will learn about the city’s early Wild West reputation; how one man rose from poverty to become the most powerful man the city has ever seen; how one area of the river purportedly became haunted; why everyone in Chicago feared a man the size of a child; and all about the world-renowned Italian crime lineage including the likes of mobsters Jim Colosimo, Johnny Torrio, and, of course, Al Capone.
NOTE: Kids under 16 are $45 per person and must ride in a double kayak with a guardian. Children too small to paddle can ride in the middle of a double kayak at no charge. Parental discretion advised for this tour.
