Learn Parkour: Adult Class

10 Have Dabbled
Fitness & Wellness
This class is taught by Parkour Ways founder and instructor Kurt Gowan.
Brief Description
Parkour is a fast-growing discipline around the globe. At it's very basic level, Parkour is is a holistic training discipline using movement. Dabblers will learn to move quickly and efficiently through their environment using only their bodies and their surroundings to propel themselves, negotiating obstacles in between. This class will introduce you to Parkour and help you to better understand what it is. You can expect to leave this class having had a great workout and a strong concept of the discipline that is Parkour.
What will I learn?
In this class, students will learn movements of our discipline including but not limited to: vaults, jumping and landing, basic movement positions, rolls and safety, climbing, balance, underbars, swinging, and a whole variety of creative movements that don't quite have common names.
What do I need to be ready?
There are no prerequisites for this class and we are willing to work with all levels. It's perfectly okay if you've never done any Parkour/Freerunning/Art du Déplacement - and it's okay if you're new to fitness as well.
What should I wear and bring?
For outdoor classes, you'll probably want to bring your own water bottle. For all classes, you should wear clothing that is comfortable for you to move around in. Long pants are recommended to protect the legs a bit more from scrapes and bruises. Most athletic shoes will work fine, you should wear what you'd go out for a run in until you develop your own preference for training shoes.
Wear clothing that you feel comfortable moving around in. Wear whatever shoes you'd typically go for a run in. For outdoor classes, it's a good idea to bring a water bottle with you.
All ages welcome
My name is Kurt Gowan and I have been teaching Parkour since 2010. I started Parkour Ways & Art du Déplacement Chicago on my own in 2011, and have since grown the organization to be a team of 6 A.D.A.P.T. certified instructors in the Chicago area.
We are the only organization in Illinois connected to the original French founders of the discipline: the Yamakasi. We occasionally host workshops or special events with the Yamakasi right here in Chicago!
Our mission is to keep L'Art du Déplacement alive as a discipline of self-improvement and development, with core values passed on by the Yamakasi.
This was my second time going. Everyone in the class was really friendly and supportive of the beginners. Kurt is a great teacher, and he is amazing to watch. Great class and a great workout.

This was a fantastic class! The teacher and the other students were welcoming and enthusiastic. While there are other students in the class who have been taking the class for months (they are not all newbies like me), they were encouraging and the class was passed well to welcome new students. Make no mistake, this class is a work out and not just jumping on top of stuff. You will actually learn some skills and feel like a semi-parkour person by the end. The instructor is also very positive and breaks everything down slowly so you are safe and can accomplish each task. Very fun class and I highly recommend taking it!
