Event Overview

Have you ever been stuck in a creative rut, or wanted to escape your mundane existence and enter a realm full of mystery and magic? The Surrealist Poetry Workshop can help! With some assistance from the surrealists, dabblers will learn to engage their Deep Minds in the creation of poetry, and ultimately discover methods to turn everyday life into a work of art.

The Surrealist Poetry Workshop is open to anyone who wants to enhance their creative writing skills, from beginner to advanced. After being given a brief introduction to surrealism, students will engage in a variety of group and solo activities designed to inspire them and open up their creative inner geniuses. At the end of sessions, dabblers will have a chance to apply their knowledge by creating original free form works of poetry.

The workshop will explore a wide variety of topics and techniques related to surrealism, include dreams, cut-ups, found material, chance procedures, détournement, surrealist games, gematria, Tarot, I-Ching, and trance states.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Born in Zaragoza, Spain, David A. Powers grew up in a small town in Michigan, where he learned to play jazz piano and developed an intense love for literature. He wrote his first poems as a teen and, influenced by writers such as William Blake, Langston Hughes, Henri Michaux, and the surrealists, he soon became obsessed by the urge to express himself through creative writing. A resident of Chicago since 2003, David can often be found wandering throughout the city of Chicago, in search of inspiration for his latest works of poetry and prose.

David is committed to both the deep history of surrealism but day-to-day expression in writing. His hands-on, writing exercises were insightful.
