Letterpress Printing, Vintage Meets Modern
24 Have Dabbled
Arts & DIY
Have you ever wondered how books and posters were printed before the invention of computers? Do you have an urge to get inky, oily, maybe a little greasy, and come out the other side with some beautiful hand printed stationery?
In this two hour "letterpress for noobs" class, Tweedle Press owner Nina Interandi Bell will illuminate the history of letterpress printing, introduce you to her shop of mechanical personalities, and take you through the process of producing beautiful letterpress printed note cards. Try your hand at mixing ink colors (totally vintage!), setting up the press with photopolymer plates (totally modern!), running prints, and braving our awesome paper cutter (totally daring!). This will provide a perfect glimpse into a sustainable working print shop, for anyone who wants to get out from behind their computer, feel a little dirty, and leave with a small stack of art.
Perhaps you'll gain a new respect for the typesetters of yore, perhaps you'll get "the bug" and want to learn more, or perhaps you'll just knock the socks off a lucky recipient of one of your snail mail goodies.
All ages welcome

Nina is Tweedle Press’ fearless leader of design, letterpress printing, and sustainability research. Her laserlike focus and penchant for mission-hood make her prone to both fits of creative excitement and, occasionally, an overwhelming urge to do everything. Her three favorite books are The Omnivore’s Dilemma, No Impact Man, and Born To Run. Also, she wants to be a cowboy.
I had a great time at Nina's letterpress class - it was fun to make our own cards (although for now-obvious reasons, we didn't get to design our own and everyone made the same cards) and to get a glimpse into how all the old letterpress machinery works. I'd consider taking this up as a hobby, but that would require way more time and money and equipment than I currently have, so this was a fantastic little foray into letterpress for me.

I learned so much about the intricacies of letterpress printing! It was fun to print my own thank you notes from press set-up, paint mixing, printing, cutting, and scoring. I left the class with 10 thank you cards & envelopes and a good understanding of the printing process.
