Event Overview

In basic sewing, I teach the fundamentals of hand sewing and help my students unravel the mysteries of needle and thread. Basic understanding of the tools and common actions of hand sewing are taught, and each student goes home with a completed small project. We will be making a really cute felt sewing accessory to use in your sewing kit. Felt is an awesome material to learn to sew on because it is easy to work with, the edges do not fray, and it comes in a wide range of colors.

Students curious about beginning sewing would greatly benefit from attending this class. Don't worry if you've never sewn anything before-I will explain all aspects of hand sewing to you, and when you are done, you should come away from class with a working knowledge of needle and thread! We will cover the following in Sewing 101:
-Materials and tools familiarization
-Techniques (basic stitches)
-Common repairs (what to do if you rip a seam in public!)
-Stocking your sewing basket
-And you will create a useful and beautiful handmade object to take home with you!
In this day and age of ultra, super, uber, awesome technology, take some time out for yourself and learn a practical, yet relaxing skill. And the next time you pop a button off your favorite shirt or split a seam and need it repaired, you won't get taken to the cleaners.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

I have been sewing since the age of eight. I am thirty-nine now, and in the interim, I've sewn many many things for lots of different reasons. I have sewn costumes for Anime enthusiasts, done alterations and tailoring for many people, have a ton of experience in children's theater in the capacity of Costumer, and made lots of items for various online boutiques. I have taught at various venues-for Scouts, Tallgrass Sudbury school in (at their former Brookfield, IL location), private students, and of course my own daughter and her homeschool friends! Obsessed with all things fiber, I've continually expanded my education by independently studying and learning about hand-spinning fibers, weaving, knitting, serging, quilting, design, etc. I currently show my fabric collage pieces at Paper Crown gallery in Arlington Heights, my original designs at Etsy, Smashing Darling, and Velvet Garden-a Goth marketplace. I love sharing my knowledge with people who have never dreamed they could sew or create something with their own hands.

The experience was setup well and I learned so much! It was fun to make a small project and learn new sewing stitches. I left feeling excited to use what I learned in some of my own projects. I'd definitely love to take more classes!

Wonderful Well-taught and I learned exactly what I had wanted to learn. Plus it sparked my interest in sewing.
