Event Overview

Soapmaking is a fun way to get back to basics and have total control over the products you're using on your body!

We will review basic soapmaking chemistry, talk (and practice!) chemical safety, and make some bath and body soap. You'll bring home soap you make in class! You'll also get a finished bar of soap to use right away, since your brand-spanking-new handmade soap needs some time to cure before it's ready. You'll leave with these physical goodies, plus an understanding of how soap is made and the knowledge to try making soap at home, if you discover that's your thing!

Be sure to wear long pants, closed shoes, and generally err on the side of "not your very favorite shirt" just in case you get some in-process soap on you. Safety and protective materials will be provided.

Kate is a certified nerd, holding a Bachelor's in Materials Science and a Master's in Environmental Engineering. That means she'll talk to you for hours about soap chemistry, if that's your jam, or she'll just make sure you know enough to feel comfortable in class. She's spent plenty of time with science outreach, so she gets that the "fun" part of "science fun" is usually more important.

The class was awesome! It was really fun to make the soap, and learning about the process was very interesting. Kate has a really passion for the scientific side of soapmaking, and was a very engaging teacher. We even got to do a little bit of experimenting. I'd highly recommend this class!

What a wonderful class! Kate is incredibly knowledgeable and gave us all the information we would need as a beginning soap maker. She really explained the process from a hobbyist's perspective. She answered all of our questions (no matter how off-the-wall). I highly recommend this class (and her soap)!

This was my first dabble class and I loved it. The teacher was very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. I have been wanting to learn to make soap for a long time and the teacher made the process simple and manageable. I can't wait to start making batches at home.

The class was a great experience! I learned everything I needed to know to be able to make my own soap at home. The instructor was very knowledgeable and answered every students questions. If you are thinking about making your own soap - this is definitely the class to take!

I took this class because I was afraid of making my own soap. No more! Kate taught us how to handle the lye safely with goggles and gloves, and had vinegar on hand in case we spilled. She is very knowledgeable on the subject and answered all of our questions right away.
