Event Overview

Yoga is more popular today than ever. If you’ve been to a yoga class in the last couple of years, you’ve likely experienced “yoga” primarily as a practice of physical postures. While physical postures can play a vital role in a yoga practice, the authentic practice of yoga has its roots in the contemplative tradition of meditation. In this tradition, physical postures are one among many means and methods of quieting the mind and preparing us for meditation.

This workshop will take you on an experiential encounter with the traditional practice of yoga. Along the way, you’ll learn about the various tools and methods of this practice as it’s outlined and described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the ancient, foundational text of yoga practice. You’ll leave with a very different understanding of this ancient practice and, even better, you’ll experience the richness of the gifts this practice offers us in modern life.

Spoiler Alert: The practices in this workshop will incorporate physical postures, but perhaps in a way you’ve never experienced them before!

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

I’m a yoga teacher at the 500-hour level and a yoga therapist. I trained as both a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist with Gary Kraftsow, founder, director, and senior teacher at the American Viniyoga Institute (AVI). I work holistically with any structural, physiological, or psycho-emotional condition, and specialize in therapeutic work for back and other musculoskeletal conditions, autoimmune conditions, arthritis, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. I'm especially interested in working with people who have been traumatized and with those who live with auto-immune conditions. In addition to my therapeutic work, I also teach on the yoga of creativity and help people unblock pathways to creative expression. In the Spring of 2013, I co-taught an advanced creative non-fiction writing course at Brown University and am writing a book on the yoga of writing, tentatively titled, Writing through the Dimensions of Being. A professional writer and editor as well as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist, I incorporate art and creativity into all levels of my work with individuals. In June 2013 I joined the International Association of Yoga Therapists as Website Editor. In 2014, I join AVI as faculty in its professional training programs.
