Event Overview

Ever wanted to write like Gandalf? Or show off your Chi-rish pride? Join us for a fun, beginner-level introduction to Celtic calligraphy!

We'll start with basic techniques, practicing lettering, and build up to writing phrases. Come and play!

You'll go home with:
- An understanding of lettering techniques
- Beginner-level mastery of the Uncial script (the Celtic-style hand pictured above)
- A finished project
- A calligraphy pen with a 3mm nib, lettering models, and materials for further practice

Minimum age

All ages welcome

Prerequisites

None. If you would like to more calligraphy practice first, you could check out our basic Calligraphy class, but it's not necessary. This class is also suitable for beginners.

What's Provided

Calligraphy pen (3mm), Uncial alphabet, guidelines, and paper

Meg Ahern has been practicing calligraphy for twenty years. In her spare time, she's a postdoctoral scholar at the humanities institute at the University of Chicago. She has a joint Ph.D. in English and Women's Studies. She's taught over two thousand people since 1999, in university courses as well a prison in Vermont and primary schools in Kenya. She loves sharing her passions and empowering others through teaching.

    The location was a bit difficult to teach in and the lights were a bit low, though the atmosphere for the topic was appropriate so no serious complaints overall.

    My girlfriend and I took this class last night and had a great time! Celtic Calligraphy is hard! But we are happy to start it as a hobby and practice, practice, practice. Thanks Meg!
