Event Overview
The Potter's Room is a ceramics studio located in Downtown Ithaca that serves the community with all ceramics-related needs. Regardless of skill level we strive to provide a basis for fine craftsmanship, successful execution, and most importantly inspiration, joy, and an appreciation for the practice of ceramics.
Dabblers will learn the basic skills needed to work with ceramic media, both on and off the wheel. Dabblers should feel free to work in whichever style (wheel work, sculpture/ hand building, or a combination of both) they prefer. At The Potter’s Room we help facilitate your ceramic education, not dictate it. Our method of teaching promotes artistic skill, free thinking, independent work ethics and community building. Dabblers will gain a basic knowledge of various techniques involved the practice of ceramics and will be able to take their work home once it is completed. It is up to the Dabbler to decide what their final product will be and we help facilitate and guide the process with a lot of instruction.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST
Tomas Black graduated from Alfred University in 2009 with a BFA in ceramics. In addition to ceramics he is trained in glass casting/blowing, metal casting/wielding, painting and sketching, mixed media, and sculpture.
Tomas's ceramics range from custom wares for homes and businesses to fine art pieces, which he calls "story pots" due to their narrative based quality.
Tomas has experience teaching to a wide range of skill levels and ages. His teaching credentials include being the assistant head of shop at Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp, a teaching assistant and head teaching aide for the Alfred University glass and ceramics shop, a primary teacher at The Glass Furnace--the premier Turkish University of Glass--Summer Program, to teaching in Northampton Massachusetts as the resident artist and teacher.
Before moving to Ithaca, Tomas had a studio, The New Green Gates Pottery, located down the road from the Leverett Buddhist Peace Pagoda in MA. It was built piece by piece by Tomas in the Summer and Fall of 2010. The studio worked as a production facility and teaching studio. Tomas harkens his business on the standard of the original Green Gates Pottery Founded in Tullstill, England by Samuel Smith where wares were made for the royalty of Europe.
In July 2013 Tomas began building the new ceramic studio; The Potter's Room by The New Green Gates, located on the Commons in Ithaca NY. The new studio is located on the Ithaca Commons at 109A East State Street. Classes are offered Tuesday-Thursday and Saturdays for students ages 7 + and shelf space rentals are offered for experienced ceramicists.
