Introduction to Chainmaille Jewelry
8 Have Dabbled
Arts & DIY
Learn the basics of making Chainmaille Jewelry with modern materials and techniques! Sharing his passion for all things rings, Dan will walk Dabblers through basic ring manipulation techniques, the short history of chainmaille, and will teach three basic and beautiful Chainmaille weaves.
European 4-1, the weave most commonly seen in historical armor, can quickly be purposed for making earrings and bracelets, and gives great examples of how the rings behave. This is also the basis for most maille mosaics, clothing, and accessories.
Byzantine chain and Box chain are related weaves, and make beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings of their own. These two chain weaves are decepively beautiful and complex looking, but can be taught to beginners- allowing you to create something beautiful in your very first sitting.
The class size is being kept small so that dabblers can recieve the one-on-one attention that makes the difference between confusion and understanding.
The class will run approximately two hours, with the last 30 minutes of that scheduled for questions, open work time, and advanced techniques if Dabblers are ready for them.
Time and interest allowing, Dabblers will be introduced to the Spiral chain weave as well.
Dabblers are encouraged to bring jewelry or beading pliers with them to the class, so they can practice with their own tools.
All ages welcome
I will be providing: 2 pair of jewelry pliers for loan to each student, and a kit of approximately 400 rings to use and take home (about enough to do each of our projects at least twice, so you can continue to experiment!)
Engineer, artist, inventor and gamer, Dan Winterhalter has been creating "things from rings" since 2005. With work spanning from armor to jewelry and mosaics to sculpture, Dan is excited to introduce the Dabble community to one of his passions.
During this class I learned three styles of mail crafting, and feel much more confident in my ability to grasp materials and concepts. Instructor is very friendly and knowledgeable on the topic.

We had a great time with Dan! He explained things well and allowed us to go at our pace. We had no experience with chain maille coming into it and both were able to walk away capable of doing 4 different weaves. Thank you!
