Learn to homebrew with the founder and President of the SF Homebrewers Guild!
In this totally interactive course we will cover the entire brewing process including proper sanitation practices, steeping grain, adding malt extract, boiling your wort, adding hops, chilling your wort, aerating wort, pitching yeast, issues with the fermentation process, and finally bottling your beer. We will do the brew on a regular kitchen stovetop. You'll learn how the process is very similar to what the pros do on their big systems and how homebrewing can fit perfectly into your life even if you live in a small apartment! Chris will demonstrate as much of the partial mash brewing process as possible in two hours and will answer all your brewing questions.
Please feel free to bring some beer to share with the group or any homebrew you'd like to share or get comments on. Chris will have a variety of beer styles on hand for the group to taste together and discuss between brewing steps. This class is for folks who are 21+ years old.
At the end of the class, you will be able to brew your first (or tenth!) batch with complete confidence!
All ages welcome
You MUST be 21+ years old to take this class.

Chris Cohen is a Certified Cicerone® and beer judge. He found his passion for brewing after he received a homebrew starter kit for his birthday in 2009. Since then, he has brewed dozens of successful extract, partial-mash, and all-grain method beers. He has taught homebrewing at the SF Ferry Building for a class offered by CUESA, the organization that runs the farmer's market, and Urban Kitchen SF.
During his first few years of brewing, Chris found himself wishing there was a local homebrew club in SF so he could interact with and learn from other homebrewers. He launched the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild in February 2012. Within its first year, the SFHG gained over 90 paid members and grew its mailing list to over 600 local homebrewers. The SFHG has grown rapidly thanks to a constant stream of fun and educational homebrew-oriented events including brew days, homebrew shares, and competitions. In early 2013 Anchor Brewing agreed to host the SFHG’s monthly meetings in their brewery taproom and the SFHG launched their “Homebrewer of the Year” homebrew competition series. SFHG members range from hardened all-grain vets to brand new extract brewers, their motto is “Brew better beer and share it!”
Chris is currently the President of the SFHG and welcomes new members to learn more by visiting www.sfhomebrewersguild.com, https://www.facebook.com/sfhomebrewersguild, and http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Homebrewers-Guild/.
Even though I had had some prior brewing experience (several 1 gal. and one 5 gal. batches) I found the instruction very useful and interesting--helped to re-inforce some things I had been doing correctly.
I would recommend it to any interested beginner.
Thanks for the feedback, John. I hope the brewing is going well!

Overall a great experience. Chris not only described the step by step process for home brewing but he made it real by doing a real time demonstration of how beer is brewed. Chris used the tools from a home brew kit and took us thorough the beer brewing process, step by step. Chris, a certified Cicerone, knows his beer and knows how to brew it. Rather than just read how the brewing process, you get to see home brew in action.
Thanks for the feedback, Seth!

This was a great class! Chris was awesome to work with and incredibly knowledgeable. He was able to take us through the whole brewing process in one evening so I was really able to learn a lot. On top of covering the main processes he was great at taking the time to explain the WHY and not just the how, so I'm a whole lot more confident in my knowledge of the process and the theory behind it. He also was able to handle all the questions we threw at him which was great because I had a lot. If you're interested in homebrewing and want to learn from an expert everything you need to know to get started, I highly recommend taking this class. Thanks to this class I'm about to start my first homebrew soon!
Thanks Daniel. I hope we run into each other around town at some beer events. If you ever have questions about brewing, feel free to shoot me a message!

Chris taught a highly informative, and detailed introductory class on the art of home brewing. I've been wanting to start home brewing for a while, so this was my opportunity to get my feet wet and hear from an industry professional about tips and tricks. Chris is an avid beer brewer, knows a ton about beers, their origins and preparation and had a perfect location for an intimate setting class. All around 5 stars!
Thanks Sieva, it was a pleasure meeting you!
