Event Overview

City living in not always conducive to gardening. Whether you live downtown in a loft, or in a city home with small lot and limited sunlight, you can explore the option of gardening on a roof.

It’s not as simple as it sounds, there are safety and structural issues to take into consideration as well as roof access. Then there is the issue of heat, especially in the summer months, so some varieties grow better than others on a rooftop.

Come to the downtown community garden where a group of residents are collectively growing food on the top deck of a parking garage nine floors above street level. See a successful rooftop garden in action and learn from our experience. We are experimenting with several growing approaches from hydroponics to smart pots, and vertical trellising to container gardens. We’ve kept tabs of what works best on a rooftop and would like to share our knowledge to encourage more rooftop applications across the city.

In this one hour class you will be welcomed with a full tour of the garden, then will sit comfortably in the shade on our picnic tables to learn about the essentials of rooftop growing from how to get started, criteria for roof selection, code restraints, planning and preparation, growing approaches, recommended products and finally plant selection.
