Carlos Orozco

Carlos Orozco directs the indigenous artists' collective Puech Ikots (www.puechikots.com) in Oaxaca, Mexico and is a skilled wood carver and painter who works in the tradition of alebrijes. Alebrijes are the colorful carved wooden animals that are well-known in Mexican folk art.

In his classes, Carlos teaches the history and significance of the alebrije in Oaxacan culture. He demonstrates the technique for wood carving and explains the process of creating alebrijes. He also discusses the Puech Ikots fair trade artists' collective and its mission to provide a path to economic autonomy for indigenous artists in the Oaxacan sierra.

All participants receive their own pre-carved, unpainted alebrije to paint. Several different alebrije animals will be available and you get to choose the one you like best! All alebrijes for Carlos' classes were individually hand-carved from tropical copal wood by the members of the Puech Ikots collective especially for this event, and brought to Chicago from Oaxaca by Carlos. With Carlos's one-on-one guidance you create a unique alebrije in your own personal style to take home!
