Kelli Wefenstette

Kelli Wefenstette grew up in the sprawling cornfields of rural Illinois, Cuba, a town of 1400 and no stoplights. She believes in living an authentic life that is wild and free even inside the city limits. A Community Organizer and Educator who resides in Portage Park, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Monmouth College and a Master’s degree in Social Justice and Community Development from Loyola University. She is also a registered yoga teacher.

Kelli engages neighborhood revitalization through the cultivation and promotion of arts, urban agriculture, and economic development. She is trained in community organizing and Asset Based Community Development and has 10+ years experience in special event planning. She created an eco-friendly craft line in 2007, co-founded a monthly, traveling craft market in 2010, and taught a workshop series guiding urban dwellers toward self-sufficiency by means of gardening, canning, composting, chicken keeping, and simple living.

Today, Kelli and Jimmyredhed work to renovate their big, red urban farmhouse into an aspiring homestead that is often filled with travelers from the world over. A practicing vegetarian, she enjoys exploring every neighborhood of Chicago, cooking with whole foods and vegetables from her garden, and cuddling with her kittens, Killer Queen and Jubilee. Her obsessions include chai tea lattes, vintage housewares, avocado green, and protest music. Kelli’s craft is her activism, an opportunity to educate others on all things political, beautiful, and life affirming while striving to radically minimize her eco-existence.

This class was a great introduction to vermicomposting, something that I've wanted to do for awhile. I've also been composting outdoors for a few years, and Kelli answered all of my questions about that as well.

Such a great class, I had been nervous about composting before, but all my questions and concerns were answered and since we made the composting box in the class, I had no excuse not to start composting that very day!! I would definitely take some of her other classes

Kelli was very well informed and did a thorough job of explaining the rationale behind composting as well as the "how-to" and trouble-shooting of composting. I'm really excited to watch my little tub of compost evolve!

Kelli gave us a really clear picture of the different methods of composting, the benefits of using composted soil, and how to keep the worms healthy and happy. Lots of good information! I am really excited to begin composting in my own home now.

This was a great class -- Kelli was incredibly informative and patient. I especially loved that we got to go home with our own compost bins (worms included) and get started right away!

The instructor was great. Kelli does this at home, so she was able to answer all of our questions with first-hand experience. Also, it's great that we were able to leave the class with everything we needed to get started.

Kelli's very knowledgeable, and she had a very good teaching plan down. She effectively communicated everything we needed to get started, with pre-printed notes to refer back to, and provided all materials for our first bin with clear instructions on where to get more in the future. I'd read about composting before but was intimidated by having to run around town looking for all the materials needed, but this made it easy.

Kelli clearly has a lot of knowledge and experience in organic gardening. It was great to learn from a season pro but also she was happy to tailor the class to what we wanted to know.

Actually getting to plant arugula to take home. The easy, comfortable conversation feel of the class.
