Nature Museum

We are the urban gateway to nature and science

History:
The Chicago Academy of Sciences was founded in 1857 as Chicago’s first museum, dedicated to the preservation and display of native specimens. Today the Academy’s collection, due to its age and type, places it among the most important in the world. In 1999, the Academy opened the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park. It has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors and is a unique venue for the public, especially urban dwellers, to find new ways to reconnect with the natural world.

Mission:
Our mission is to create a positive relationship between people and nature through collaborations, education, research and collections, exhibits and public forums that fosters urban connections to our region’s nature and science.

What We Do:
The Museum provides award-winning exhibitions and programs to 70,000 students annually and trains and provides resources for more than 2,000 Chicago teachers. The Nature Museum is one of the city’s best examples of eco-friendly building technology, including a green roof, solar panels, natural light sources and native landscaping. The Academy and its Museum are engaged in important conservation and research work, such as its Butterfly Restoration Project.

A wonderful class! I would definitely recommend it to both the curious and enthusiasts alike. A quick lepidopterology lesson followed by a walk through the butterfly hall and a tutorial on pinning basics left plenty of time for learning by doing! The teacher was very attentive and spread his time evenly amongst the class. Went home with some lovely pinned specimen!

This class was great! We were provided with some gorgeous butterflies from the Butterfly Haven at the Museum (don't worry, they died of natural causes!), given a some fascinating background on the history of insect collecting (apparently, a woman entomologist from the 17th century was deemed insane because of her interest in collecting butterflies), and then shown how to turn our butterflies into works of art. The class was very small (only 5 people), so we got lots of individual attention if we wanted it, and we each got to take home two pinned butterflies and a nice shadowbox to put them in. The evening concluded with an after-hours tour of the Butterfly Haven, where we got to see live butterflies emerging from cocoons and flying in the open air. It's an awesome experience, don't miss it!

This is a good class if you're looking to start small and learn a few things about worm composting. The bin you leave with is quite small, so if you're serious about wanting to compost a higher volume of your vegetable matter than a few banana peels a week, you might want to look for a different class or do more research online instead.

Walked in feeling excited. Walked out feeling uninspired. The class was geared towards people with art experience. I have no experience and could have used some instruction. We spent a lot of time watching instructor draw. When it came to us drawing, the instructor spent very little time guiding me, (new to the whole art thing). I might as well have stayed home and been by myself. I liked the experience but very discouraged from picking up the pencils on my own. The instructor was very nice and open, just not a great teacher.

It was a nice small group of people. The instructors were knowledgeable and generous with their time. It was a good sample exposure to Qigong and Meditation!
