Event Overview

Bookbinding: The All-Along-Stitch
Participants will have the opportunity to make and take home a multi-section book, using a long stitch sewing method.

The sewing is exposed as a feature on the outside cover spine of the book. Inside the book, space between the pages allows for the optional addition of paper-based materials if necessary.

Although this type of book structure has a contemporary appearance in a hardbound cover, it is a bookbinder's sewing technique with medieval origins.

This book structure is versatile and the sewing method can be applied to hard & soft back covers.

Name of Instructor: Jennifer Rich
Instructor Biography: Jennifer lives and works in Chicago, IL. Jennifer grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Washington University with Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking & Drawing. She was an artist-in-residence at the Wormfarm Institute in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. When she is not working on an art project, she loves to cook, swim, and explore Chicago.

Directions to Studio: The Bridgeport Art Center is located at 3200 West 35th Street in Chicago and our studio can be a bit tricky to get to. There is ample parking on the north side of the building by 34th Street and Racine. The studio itself is located on the 5th floor of the Fashion Design Center. Entrance to the Fashion Design Center is on Racine Ave, the east side of the building.

Do not come in through the entrance off of the parking lot – you will get utterly lost. Once you see the intercom box by the entrance door on the Racine side, press key Star (*) 5405 and you will be buzzed in. Take the elevator to Floor 5 and as you exit make a left until the end and then a right until you get to studio 5405.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Who we are!

The world around us is changing quickly but our need for communal gatherings in a nurturing and creative setting is not. Urban Threads Studio is a D-I-Y (do it yourself) collaborative studio that hopes to introduce you to the wonderful ancient craft of sewing and textile art with a 21st century twist. You may just want to rediscover a skill you learned as a child, experience the calm energy of a day of crafting or pick up an altogether new or more advanced skill like dyeing or felting. Our program hopes to accomplish all that and much more. Join us in the adventure and: register for a workshop, celebrate a next birthday with a textile art party, sign up the kids for summer camp, ask us about after school programs or enroll your youth organization in our 2013 community project.

If you need a personal consultation please call our Artistic Director, Michelle Santoro, at (708) 717-3740
