Get ready to learn about something extraordinarily beautiful--genuine gold leaf! Did you know gold leaf is actual gold beaten into delicate, translucent leaves? Described as " …like a half-solidified piece of sunlight" by American artist Charles Prendergast, it is so delicate when you pick it up, it simply dissipates in your fingers! So translucent, when held up to the light, you can almost see through it! You will learn about how the fragile beauty of gold is used in the craft of water gilding. What is water gilding, you ask? It is the art of applying gold leaf onto a meticulously prepared surface, primarily wood, using a water-based adhesive. With a burnishing tool, the surface is then highlighted by pressing the gold transforming it to a brilliant mirror-like luster the hallmark of this beautiful art! It is a multi-step process and a labor of love that many know little about. And did you know gold leaf is everywhere? Gold leaf adorns picture frames, mirrors, furniture, art, architecture, music instruments…the list goes on!
Come and enjoy a brief lecture about this fascinating process. You will learn about the special tools and materials used, along with illustrations and a demonstration. You will also burnish your own gilded home accessory!
