Event Overview
Fire is transformative. For thousands of years humans have used fire to manipulate and shape glass into beautiful works of art, such as beadwork. ArtReach is offering students of all levels (beginner to expert) the opportunity to experience this powerful, ancient art practice firsthand - and jazz up their jewelry at the same time!
Under the careful guidance of an experienced and talented glass artist, students will use gas torches to heat and shape rods of glass into beautiful glass beads, a technique known as lampworking, or flameworking. In honor of Earth Day - and the emerging spring weather - the teaching artist will show students how to create floral, bird and bee designs and shapes.
In a one-hour time slot, each student will be able to make about 4 beads, which will need to be picked up 3 days later. Students will be notified the week of the workshop which one-hour time slot they will have.
All materials and safety equipment will be provided. Due to the nature of the tools and materials used, this class is appropriate for students ages 10 and older. The first floor, on which ArtReach’s classes take place, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
