Event Overview
Curiosity is a beautiful thing. It is what propels artists into finding new ways to express their ideas.
In this class we will explore "the mechanism" in a new way. We will explore motors and movement, power supplies and electric circuits, and finally....resources.
The class is supplied with a kit that has all the parts needed to build a flapping mechanism. We will use the mechanism to talk about all the basic parts that make up more complex machines.
Upon leaving, you will be able to read and get excited by tech specifications! Why? Because you will understand the potential - and there by - the poetry of movement.
What to Bring
All materials will be supplied in the workshop. Please bring coffee and curiosity.

All ages welcome
What's Provided
I will provide a kit that includes motors, power supply, hardware, linkages, resource lists and tech notes.

After over 25 years of making kinetic sculpture, I have learned a few tricks. I have shared these tricks in classes I have taught at both SAIC and UIC. Over the years I have learned how to break down complex mechanical designs and explain not only how things work, but also most importantly, how to build them. With a vast knowledge of local and online resources, I can quickly guide students to where they can find the odd shoulder bolt or the high volume, low voltage pneumatic valve. I have long since embraced my inner geek and with zero inhibitions I will get excited about all things tech. This excitement is generally contagious and always fosters desire to create.

Christopher, whose own work is beyond impressive, is generous with his knowledge and his patience. The class was an easy to absorb introduction to what it takes to build something with moving parts. Got to take home a little moving gadget that is not only a reminder of what I learned but also something to experiment and play with later; gained an invaluable source list; and made new friends with similar interests. Fun and informative day!

The course was great! We met a lot of fascinating people and got to construct a fully functional mechanical/electrical machine. Simple, but definitely worthwhile!

This was an amazing workshop. I learned so much and had a great time. Christopher Furman was beyond thorough with his instructions and entertaining as well. The other students were upbeat, interesting and focused. Christopher gave us a handout that was clear and easy to use. He included links so that we can order parts and tinker on our own. I was impressed by the amount of preparation he put into this class, even supplying custom made parts for our flying machine. This class was engaging and lots of fun. I highly recommend it.
