Event Overview

Ryan Gosling once said of his day learning to knit, “It was one of the most relaxing days of my life.” PBS’ Braincraft agrees that knitting is relaxing and reveals other wide ranging benefits for those who knit.

Come and join me to learn this relaxing and productive skill. We’ll learn the basics of knitting: the knit stitch, how to start a project (cast on) and how to finish a project (bind off).  If time permits, or for those who already know the basic knit stitch, we will also learn the purl stitch and how to read a pattern.  We will knit a swatch that can be cast off as a square to be used as a coaster, a trivet or a square in a blanket or you can keep going until you use up the ball of yarn and make it into a scarf or cowl. Whether you have never knit before or you need a refresher, this class will get you started.

This is listed as a one time class for 2 hours, but it has been my experience that taking a second class, my Beginner Knitting 2 class, helps solidify the muscle memory of the basic foundation you need as well as adding additional skills. Beginner Knitting 2 will be listed as a separate class to occur a week after Beginning Knitting 1.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

I have been knitting for over 20 years and developing my teaching method for the last 10 years. For the past year I have been putting my method into action teaching beginner knitting classes to children and adults in my home. A recent student said, "At least 10 people have tried to teach me to knit. I was both bored and confused as to why people would willingly do this. That is, until Jennifer. Now I understand - it is relaxing and creative. I have become a knitting convert - I knit secretly at work, while watching bad tv, and a little bit before bed."

My favorite items to knit are socks, pants for babies and fair isle hats and sweaters. I plan to offer classes to make these items in the future.
