Ryan Gosling once said of his day learning to knit, “It was one of the most relaxing days of my life.” PBS’ Braincraft agrees that knitting is relaxing and reveals other wide ranging benefits for those who knit.

In Beginner Knitting 2, we will continue to practice the basics of knitting: the knit stitch, how to start a project (cast on) and how to finish a project (bind off).  We will also build on that foundation by learning the purl stitch, the slip stitch, the yarn over, how to increase and decrease stitches and how to read a pattern.  We will knit one or more swatches in patterns that can be cast off as a square to be used as a coaster, a trivet or a square in a blanket or you can keep going until you use up the ball of yarn and make it into a scarf or cowl. This class is intended for beginner knitters or those that need a refresher but have learned the basic knit stitch.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

I have been knitting for over 20 years and developing my teaching method for the last 10 years. For the past year I have been putting my method into action teaching beginner knitting classes to children and adults in my home. A recent student said, "At least 10 people have tried to teach me to knit. I was both bored and confused as to why people would willingly do this. That is, until Jennifer. Now I understand - it is relaxing and creative. I have become a knitting convert - I knit secretly at work, while watching bad tv, and a little bit before bed."

My favorite items to knit are socks, pants for babies and fair isle hats and sweaters. I plan to offer classes to make these items in the future.
