Arts & DIY
Lyra/Aerial Hoop is a metal circle that is suspended from a single point. While Climbing, inverting, rolling and turning every which way on these apparatuses, you will discover their center of gravity in many different positions. You will learn how to move from different positions with grace and ease while gaining strength and control. On lyra you will learn all of the above with the added excitement of spinning. After growing comfortable with solo work, you can learn to work in pairs and teams to build shapes in the air, turning them inside out and upside down in poses that highlight both strength and flexibility.
The 1 hour class with 4 students includes a warm up, strength training, conditioning tips, and stretching. You'll learn at your own pace and interest level. Beginners will focus on proper body position, muscle usage, basic positions, and basic balances. More advanced students will learn more difficult skills, choreography and artistry. As your strength and confidence increase, you'll be amazed at what you are capable of doing.
*Please note: actual class time on Sundays runs from 3:45pm-4:45pm*
Wear clothing that covers the backs of your knees and under your arms. You will want a shirt that can be tucked in to give your back protection, long stretch pants or footless tights. Tighter fitting clothing that gives you full range of motion is best.

Nena ran away with the oldest collegiate circus in North America, the Gamma Phi Circus at Illinois State University. With the Gamma Phi Circus, she performed in front of thousands of people and traveled to Germany for the international gymnastics festival, Turnfest. Her performances include Lyra, Duo Trapeze, Tightwire, and Aerial Silks. She has performed for and worked at children’s summer circus camps in Chicago, and is now teaching Lyra and Tightwire at Trapeze School New York in Chicago.
As always, a great experience at Trapeze School New York. This was my first time trying Lyra after taking numerous trapeze classes with them. The Lyra instructor was great and made everyone feel confident and safe as we tried out new skills.
