Event Overview

Stop what you’re doing. Google image search “Itajime.” Are you as excited as we are?

Join shibori artist Christian Ortiz as he teaches you - always in trend - Shibori Designs & Techniques. The Japanese term shibori, which means to wring, squeeze or press, now encompasses many different forms of resist-dyeing which all involve shaping and compressing fabric in some way before dyeing it.

In this class you will learn 'Itajime' which is an umbrella term for a number of clamp-resist dyeing techniques used in Japan which produce symetrical repeating patterns on fabrid through folding and clamping. It is traditionally done with wooden boards bound with string. The fabric can be folded into squares, rectangles or triangles to make different patterns. Boards can be positioned in various ways to expose different parts of the folded fabric and infinite variations can be achieved by changing the size or shape of the board or clamp and by dipping the fabrid in different ways. At the same time Christian will also introduce Batik variations.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

We are a Not For Profit organization whose mission is "Textile Art for All". If it is textile based and you can make it by hand, we want to teach it in our studios at the beautiful Bridgeport Art Center! Our philosophy is to run contemporary, hands-on, project-based workshops, so that you can come along, learn something new and go home with a finished product or a new skill. Why? Because there is tremendous power in making something yourself. You will learn new skills or revisit old ones; you will discover the joy of working with your hands and you will find an outlet for your creativity. Along the way you will review your spirit and perhaps make a few new friends. All of our classes are taught by visiting artists and/or experts in the field. We offer adult workshops in beginning sewing, intermediate sewing, couture sewing and 45 different surface design techniques. For kids we offer Saturday programs and summer camps. We also offer textile art events for birthdays, bridal showers, girls night out etc. so ask Dabble about group pricing.

All of our classes are offered at a nominal fee and all proceeds are used to bring textile arts to urban youth in Chicago in form of after school programs, summer programs, apprenticeships and internships.

We look forward to welcoming you in our studios.
Your Urban Threads Studio Team

This class was great fun! Going into it I had no idea what to expect as I'd never really looked into Shibori Itajime dyeing- I was pleasantly surprised! The class was fun and easy, and at the end I walked away with some beautiful dyed fabric, and a lot more knowledge about dyeing, supplies, and Shibori!
