Event Overview

What’s the difference between a regular old journal, diary, sketchbook, scrapbook and a visual journal? A visual journal is all of these things and more, it is a container for the whole process. It is a place where you can glue down anything you want to plan, keep, remember, doodle, or record notes and thoughts about.

Carl Jung is often referred to as a ‘poster person’ for visual journaling, because he maintained a regular practice of visual journaling. He generally created small circular drawings that he believed corresponded to his inner feelings and the archetypal realm of the unconscious. Visual journaling has become a popular trend, not only is it a fun creative activity, but it can allow us to develop a relationship with the self through the development of a relationship with our book.

This Art Studio is for those of any experience level who want to learn and explore the process of creating art using pieces from upcycled materials. Visual journals can be a creative way to document our lives, memories and more through using the paper around us in combination with writing, collage, doodling, drawing, stamping, painting and other exciting tools or techniques.

Emily's Perspective

As an art therapist I believe that all people can benefit from engaging in the process of art making, regardless of their skill level or experience. The process I use is client-centered and psychodynamic. I honor and value the cultivation of a close relationship with the self, empowering true growth potential that is absolute within the therapeutic relationship. Compassion and acceptance are rooted in my practice, which encourages healing in a nonjudgmental environment. Expressing art in this atmosphere inspires the intimate exploration of an individual and their story, to create and build a better understanding of their process and journey.
