Event Overview

In this class, students will hand forge their own knives.  This is an opportunity to make a favorite tool for the kitchen or the field, with guidance from a highly experienced teacher.  Students will be introduced to the process of forging a blade from parent stock, using a forge and anvil, hammers and tongs.  Once the blade is forged, you'll grind it to the desired profile, heat treat it, polish, sharpen it and put a handle on it.  We'll discuss at length subjects such as shop safety, forging technique, blade geometry and polishing methods.

This is a great opportunity to enter into a very satisfying hobby, as well as a way to expand your skills and interests.  This class is geared for the novice, and no prior experience is necessary.  This class requires several hours of committment, spaced over three weekends.  Space is very limited.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Duende means passion that rises out of the ground to possess the artist until it is fully expressed. I named my shop for this experience because that was my experience when I first started working with hammers and hot iron. I love sharp and pointy things, and take great delight in forging knives for the kitchen and field (I also really like swords, but that's for a different day). I also deeply enjoy meeting new students and introducing them to the craft of knife making. I have been making knives in my spare time for more than 17 years, and it just keeps getting more and more interesting.
