Ever wonder what your teenager means by "Snapchat"? Do you question why they may be acting particularly moody? Are you concerned that peer pressure may be influencing their behaviors? In an ever changing world of social media, the legalization of marijuana, and high demand for success, the usual difficulties of being an adolescent are now intensified. This one day course has been developed to help parents better understand their teenagers. Knowledge gained from this course will include, but is not limited to: 


1- A basic understanding of adolescent development that could help explain those mood swings, lowered self-esteem, and limit testing.


2- An understanding of social media trends. Including how to protect your teen while still giving them individual freedom to express themselves on social media outlets. 


3- Drug and alcohol trends that could be influencing your adolescent's behaviors. 


4- Tips to approaching difficult topics with your teen and how to have a positive relationship with open communication. 


This class is open to anyone wanting to better understand an adolescent in their life. Adolescence begins between ages 11-13 and surprisingly can last up until age 21. Each class will cover the topics mentioned above and will allow time for open discussion so that you can gain support from parents facing similar challenges.

Leigh Ann has many years of experience working with children, families, and adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses. One of her passions is facilitating therapeutic groups and watching the healing power which exists within numbers. She believes peer support is the greatest gift we can ever give to one another. Leigh Ann has a history of working with individuals experiencing mood disorders, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. However, she also enjoys working with people who wish to further understand their existence, values, and personal philosophies.

You are always the expert in your life. Therefore, as a counselor, I will meet you where you are at and walk along side of you. A sincere approach with genuine compassion is my upmost priority when working with groups or individuals. I practice from strength-based approaches, such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy. I also believe that exploring past and present attachments with others, can help understand our current behavioral patterns. Life is a journey, and it would be my privilege to be a part of yours.
