Block Printing on Fabric

Arts & DIY
Block printing is present in cultures and textiles from all over the world. Indian saris, eastern European dresses, and early American wall hangings have all used printmaking techniques to decorate and honor their surroundings. This class will cover the basics of block printing on fabric, with the opportunity to create custom hand-printed fabric for sewn projects, or make something you already own more unique!
This class will introduce students to designing and carving blocks, as well as handling the tools necessary for basic printmaking. Color blending, working with ink, and pattern repetition will all be demonstrated and students will be encouraged to mess up, experiment, and get dirty before printing on their final piece. This class is a beginner friendly class, and great for people who want to try printmaking for the first time, incorporate printmaking into their other artistic endeavors, or just want to make something unique! Students will leave with basic block carving skills, learn how to use a brayer for even application of ink, and see different pattern and layering techniques.
Before coming to class, please consider what image or design you would like to carve. The nature of carving on blocks and printing on fabric lends itself well to simple, graphic designs such as geometric, floral, or abstract.
Fabric item that the student would like to print on. Possibilities include scarves, cotton or muslin yardage for sewn projects, pre-made tea towels, or a skirt or shirt you already own. Images tend to print better on smooth, close knit fabrics.
All ages welcome
Provided: carving tools, one 4"x6" mounted linoleum block, ink, and scrap fabric for testing and experimentation

Ashley Quick is a printmaker and textile artist living in Denver, Colorado. Originally from Wyoming, she has spent the last several years teaching courses and workshops of all levels in printmaking mediums such as relief, monotype, intaglio and stone lithography. Ashley is a graduate of the University of Wyoming in Art with a focus in printmaking and drawing.
In her own work she often incorporates fabric, quilting, and embroidery and has experience printing on fabric to use in quilts and as elements in printed work.
After moving to Denver she became a member of Red Delicious Press in Aurora, Colorado which is a community printmaking co-op. She is looking forward to meeting more Denver artists, crafters, and all-around excellent people.
Ashley's class was a very good experience. She had us all come up to the desk, and demonstrated how to cut the linoleum block. She also gave us websites to check out to buy our products. I needed a little extra help, and she made me feel like my questions were good, and she was very patient. She even took pictures of our finished work. I would highly recommend her class!

Ashley, the teacher, was very organized and it was easy to follow the directions. The two hour class was enough time to carve a block and start printing. Some students printed on t-shirts or scarf, I printed on a pillowcase and really liked the results. This class is good for very beginners as well as experienced printers as printing on fabric is just a little different than paper, but well worth the effort!

Awesome experience! Ashley was fantastic and created a fun, laid back experience to learn. Fun to leave class with something you created.

I loved Ashley's class! I learned a ton and had a good deal of one-on-one time. Ashley was super enthusiastic about my design and had great advice. I actually bought all of the supplies to make my own at home and I couldn't be more excited to create pillows, tea towels, wrapping paper, art, etc for gifts and around the home.

Great class. Ashley did a nice job of explaining the process. She made great suggestions as I was working on the project. It was a fun experience. I love my new scarf!

I had a really enjoyable evening learning how to block print on fabric. Ashley was a wonderful instructor and gave us very individual attention and celebrated our successes with us. I would like to take more classes with her, and perhaps do more fabric printing as well.

My first block printing experience was great! Ashley stated things simply and was very knowledgable. I loved that we got to keep our own blocks for future use. Perhaps it would be helpful to have more examples of what the print would look like depending on what kind of material it was printed on.

Ashley was friendly and kept her instruction quick and to the point, so as to give us plenty of time to work (carving takes a lot longer than I originally though!). I appreciated her moving the class along base on her expertise ("5 more minutes to transfer sketch", "10 more minutes on the etching") so as to ensure we had enough time to complete all the steps. Fun atmosphere, good class size (5 students). Would gladly take another class with her. :)

Class informative and fun. I really liked that we walked away with a finished product. Ashley is an easy going and supportive teacher. Will recommend!

Ashley is a pro, and yet she's able to conduct a very casual, relaxed class. I learned a lot about block printing without feeling like I was in a classroom, and the materials we used were high-quality and generous. I absolutely recommend taking this class!!
