Project Creativity : Art Journaling 101 + Altered Books with Caryn Patterson

Event Overview

Art Journaling 101: Altered Books offers a taste of the beautiful world of mixed media and art journaling through the upcycling of discarded books. Collage, watercolor, inks, stamping, writing, and drawing come together to communicate feelings and ideas, either to share with others or to keep to oneself.

Fostering the expression of feeling and ideas through art has been Caryn Patterson’s life work, both in and out of the classroom.  Using both found and bought materials, artists will come away from Art Journaling 101 with the beginnings of an altered book and hopefully some inspiration to continue the project on their own.

(Please wear clothes you don't mind getting messy. You will be painting, glueing and getting creatively messy.)

Facilitator: Caryn Patterson is an artist and art teacher who has taught art for 18 years both in St. Louis Public Schools and Meramec Valley in Pacific, Missouri.  In addition to teaching in public school, she has worked with churches and for a time reinvented what it meant to be a direct sales representative for a stamp company.  Caryn loves to create fiber art, writing, and finds her favorite work in mixed media.  These works are on canvas, index cards, and in art journals.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Project Creativity is a new series of craft and art-making classes offered by the Sheldon Art Galleries, designed to help you discover your creative abilities! This summer, we offer our first set of classes, teaching the art of flower origami and pinhole camera-making. A cash bar and light snacks will be available. Bring friends and make it an evening of fun, cocktails and creative crafting!

The not-for-profit Sheldon Art Galleries exhibits works by local, national and international artists in all media. Over 6,000 square feet of the galleries’ spaces on the 2nd floor are permanently devoted to rotating exhibits of photography, architecture, music art and history and children’s art. A sculpture garden, seen from both the atrium lobby and the connecting glass bridge, features periodic rotations and installations, and the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery on the lower level features art of all media. The Sheldon actively supports the work of St. Louis artists in all mediums and features a dedicated gallery with museum-quality exhibits by St. Louis artists, past and present.

This was a birthday present to a friend, and we both loved the experience! Caryn was very friendly and knowledgeable, ready to help anyone that had a question. She provided tons of art journaling materials, making for a crafty afternoon and leaving me inspired for future projects.
