Urban beekeeping is on the rise! As global bee populations dwindle, now more than ever, it is critical to provide these beneficial pollinators a habitat free of pesticides, full of nectar and pollen resources, and a safe home.
This workshop will provide an overview of what it takes to get started. Please bring your bee questions and curiosity to this discussion of bee biology, equipment and tools, stings and protective clothing, and resources for continued learning.
About the Educators:
Jennifer McComb is in her seventh year keeping honey bees, mostly in St Louis City. Her bee picture diary may be seen on Instagram #mccombhoney.
Jeremy Idleman of Bee Found St. Louis, a new organization that believes new beekeepers should be taught the pros and cons of treatment-free beekeeping in an effort to keep the strongest, healthiest bees without the use of dangerous chemicals. Bee Found wants to prepare new beekeepers for the upsides and the downsides of the hobby in an effort to retain them into life-long beekeepers.

Urban Harvest STL empowers communities to cultivate equitable access to healthy, sustainably grown food and enhance biodiversity in cities. We envision vibrant cities where under-utilized spaces are transformed into productive urban farms which restore natural ecosystems and engage people of all ages to create stronger, more nourishing bonds with each other - and with nature.
We built the first rooftop farm in the St Louis, the FOOD ROOF Farm, atop a building downtown. The FOOD ROOF Farm is a unique, innovative project and a platform for urban agriculture and sustainable design. This project serves as a catalyst to improve overall health and well-being of our community.
This was a great experience all around. The presenters were very informative & provided genuine advice as to how to begin bee keeping in the city. It was also neat to be able to explore Food Roof Farm!

The class was intimate and incredibly informative. The instructor, Jennifer, was so down to earth and approachable. Her genuine passion for beekeeping was inspiring. The location, the Food Roof (Urban Harvest), was perfect! Such a unique way to spend an afternoon in downtown STL. I recommend for anyone, even slightly interested in beekeeping or simply interested in learning more about bees.

Honey Bees was a great workshop. The location could not have been more perfect, and the teacher, Jennifer McCombs, was quietly passionate and knowledgeable. The photos in the hive slides were beautiful.
