Event Overview

Want to learn how to make dumplings? We’ll teach you! Come celebrate Chinese New Year 2016 with one of Chicago's best food trucks!

We will provide all the tools, ingredients, and sauces. All you have to do is come ready for hands-on dumpling assembly. We’ll provide a demonstration on different ways to fold dumplings and then have guests try it themselves. We will also be serving a full prix fixe menu of our favorite dishes from our truck! Of course, all the dumplings we made ourselves will be included. Just remember, ugly or pretty, they will be delicious!

We will make sure our guests leave with a full stomach and the confidence to experiment at home! BYOB is highly encouraged and goodies given to take home!

After graduating from the University of Illinois, Jeff Wang worked in corporate America like most college graduates. However, sitting in front of a computer for 8+ hours per day wasn’t exactly his idea of how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Jeff left his job and pursued his dreams of food. After taking a trip to China and Taiwan, the concept of a dumpling truck was brought back and he started the Yum Dum Truck, Chicago's dumpling food truck!

Jeff grew up in the restaurant industry, as his parents owned several restaurants. He was always in the kitchen and eager to learn. He loves the happiness that food can bring and always knew that one day, he would end up in the kitchen as well. He just never knew it would be in the back of a truck!

His vision is to combine his mom’s Asian home cooking with his experiences abroad. He believes food should be a unique cultural experience and wants to share his culture with you. With the help of his creative team, it is his goal to bring delicious, authentic, and creative Asian food to Chicago with the Yum Dum Truck.

    There was SO much food and ample time to get to know those around you. The instructor told really great stories and was as attentive as he could be, given the size of the class. The stories he told about his mom and sister and the creation of his food truck, as well as the meaning behind dumplings and the Chinese New Year celebration were really fascinating. My advice to those attending this class - go hungry!

    DELICIOUS experience. great, funky venue. really personable, friendly hosts and groovy soundtrack. enjoyed 5 (?) courses, prepped by the YumDum folks, then learned how to make potstickers in a hands-on/interactive demo environment. i'm going to be dreaming of the kimcheesey rice balls for quite some time.

    I really enjoyed this class. Beginner friendly. Jeff had great stories and information to share. And the food was quite amazing as well. I especially enjoyed the soba noodle salad, the beef bao-wich and ice cream dessert with sriracha pecan brittle. Can't wait to see the Yum Dum truck out on the streets. The party was a great experience, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone :)

    The food was amazing and the class was great! BYOBing was a great idea, and went great with what was essentially a five course meal of dumplings and Korean small plates. Jeff was a lot of fun and his love of making and eating food was infectious. Making the dumplings themselves was super simple thanks to the prep work by the Yum Dum crew, and is definitely something I can now try at home.

    This was a great class that made dumpling-making feel a lot more accessible. Otherwise, the experienced was paced really well; there was plenty of other foods sampled throughout the course in addition to the instruction portions. I left full of delicious food and very happy from the experience :)

    The class was great fun. A large and friendly group for the most part. The instructor, Jeff (owner of the Yum Dum Food Truck) was very sociable, helped everybody along and his 2 assistants were helpful and friendly as well. I would definitely recommend this class. Some people think that Asian cooking is intimidating, but don't be intimidated, this class was fun, informative and takes the fear out of making Asian dumplings. The food was amazing as well.
