Event Overview

Visit with an urban beekeeper and taste honey from all over the US and a few from far away!

We'll talk about how bees make honey and store it, and why it's nature's most perfect food. You'll try around 20 honeys and get to see what it looks like inside of the honey comb itself. We will also try propolis and talk about the other products honeybees grace us with. This class is ideal for anyone with a curiosity for the natural world, as well as those involved in the culinary arts.

You'll walk away with a new respect for bees and the flowers that make each honey unique.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST

Jana created an urban beekeeping initiative called Bike a Bee, and keeps hives at urban gardens and farms all over the city, tending to them on her bicycle. She loves sharing the magic of honeybees, and has a collection of 30 or so unique honeys from all over to help illustrate just how special they are. Aside from keeping bees, she is also an illustrator and amateur naturalist.

We sampled at least 17 different honeys, from around the country, and some from outside of the country. Jana told us how the honey was different in terms of the likely sources of the nectar. She also taught us all kinds of interesting facts about honey bees. The whole thing was very inspirational.
