ABOUT THIS EVENT
When you watch TV and movies, you're watching a scene—or several scenes—in action! Writing, acting, camera, editing—the whole 9 yards. We are all conditioned to watch and enjoy our favorite programs almost without question. But how does it all come together?
In this class, you will:
- Work with a scene partner to write a two-person dialogue (one page)
- Act out a short scene
- Learn the basics of "Single Camera Production" (Actor "Masters" and "Singles")
- Learn the 180-degree rule
- Take home your edit (though edits may be e-mailed to you later based on time)
This class is for anyone who is interested in pursuing filmmaking, writing or shooting a short film, or understanding how to shoot a scene with cuts and over the shoulder shots.
This class is not:
- A camera class (we will be using a Super 35 camera, but this will be operated by the instructor. Basic questions can be answered)
- A sound class
- A scriptwriting class (we will write short scripts but these likely will not adhere to industry standard format)
Will I be on camera? Yes, though there is a chance other participants can fill in if you are uncomfortable.
Do I need a camera? No.
How many people will be in a group? We will pair off into groups of 2.
Where will the event be held? If the description has not been updated yet, the class will be within the city of Chicago, close to CTA.
What to Bring
Laptop or pen / pencil and paper.
I will provide the filmmaking equipment (camera, lenses, sound). These will be operated by the instructor.

MORE ABOUT YOUR HOST
Oh, um, hi! Hello, come on in .
Glad you found your way here. Let me just move this...OK, great, have a seat!
You're probably reading this because you're interested in a class I'm offering and you want to know what you're getting yourself in to, or what crowd you might be running with. Hey, brother, I can appreciate that!
My name is Jack Pochop and I have 5+ years working in professional video production. You might be saying to yourself, "5 years? Well that ain't a whole lot, is it?" And you're right! I'm still learning, too.
But what I can say is that I've learned a lot in my five years and would love to pass some of that information on to you. I've worked under the tutelage of Robbie Benson (Beauty and the Beast, Ice Castles), and have assisted filmmaking classes at Indiana University. I have produced 3 original horror shorts, 1 of which was featured in the AV Club, and have since launched my own video production company, working with large brands like Royal Caribbean, Alamo Drafthouse, and Famous Dave's.
There are a few other accomplishments in there but I think you are probably cool on that information for now.
