Would you like the skills to find a job that allows you to work your own hours, and get paid a competitive salary? If so, then proofreading is for you. At this time in Chicago, proofreading work is available on a freelance or full-time basis for publications, typographers, corporations & a variety of other organizations.

Proofreading, simply stated, is the editing of “proofs”, finished sheets of typeset copy. You need to learn a standard system of marks and notations, acquire the sharp eye needed to spot mistakes & know when and how to consult references such as a dictionary or style book.

This class will give you a complete primer on proofreading. You’ll learn proofreading symbols & gain a sense of how to edit, with plenty of opportunity to practice on a variety of printed material. At the end of the course, you’ll learn about job opportunities for proofreaders & how to find them. Bring a fine point red pen.

Alison Moran has been editing publications since 1987. She's done it all... newsletters, brochures, magazines, digital media presentations, annual reports, and blogging. Some advice from this veteran writer? "It's the details that'll kill you. Read critically, and read again!"
